Windstar Cruises

Windstar Cruises is a small-ship operator founded in 1984, with operational headquarters in Miami. It belongs to Xanterra Travel Collection, part of The Anschutz Corporation. Its fleet combines sailing yachts with motor yachts, so choosing the brand still leaves a meaningful choice between different kinds of ship.

Seven vessels currently form the operating passenger fleet. Wind Star, Wind Spirit and Wind Surf are the sailing yachts; Star Breeze, Star Legend, Star Pride and Star Seeker are the motor yachts. Seeker was delivered in December 2025 and is already operating. The company's wider eight-ship presentation also includes Star Explorer, whose Windstar debut remains scheduled for December 2026 at this review date.

Explorer is undergoing extensive modification before that introduction. This future programme is kept separate from the seven ships already carrying Windstar passengers. A conversion and brand debut should not be mistaken for the original construction of an entirely new hull. Individual records distinguish actual ship history from the date it joins a later operator.

The sailing yachts have engines as well as sails. Their atmosphere and outdoor arrangements differ from those of the all-suite motor yachts. Compare the particular ship, accommodation and itinerary rather than expecting a single standard layout across the fleet. Wind Surf is also larger than Wind Star and Wind Spirit, despite sharing the Wind Class product identity.

The operator emphasises smaller destinations, longer port visits and a relaxed onboard setting. These are useful starting points, but the actual arrival and departure times determine the scope for an independent day ashore. Check whether the selected call involves a tender or a berth and how that affects transport plans.

Onboard products and services are priced in US dollars. The published passenger information distinguishes the shipboard account from spending ashore and states that onboard currency exchange is unavailable. That policy should be assessed separately from the currency used to buy the cruise in a particular market.

Before choosing, compare dining inclusions, the reserved room and the time you expect to spend aboard. A sailing-yacht voyage and a motor-yacht itinerary may suit different priorities even within the same region. Align independent transport with confirmed boarding instructions, and judge the ship through the specific route and accommodation you intend to book.
