Port reference

Funchal

Funchal is Madeira's principal cruise destination on the island's south coast. Its bay faces the Atlantic, with the city rising behind the waterfront. This is Madeira rather than one of the Canary Islands, even though both archipelagos commonly appear on the same cruise itinerary. The regional port authority APRAM publishes the actual berth programme and access rules.

Coordinates identify the general port, not a passenger entrance. A dash means the value has not been independently verified.

Gare Marítima da Madeira stands on Molhe da Pontinha. It is a useful passenger-terminal reference, but the port also identifies northern and numbered cruise quays. A ship's assigned berth therefore matters more than a generic marker for the harbour. Confirm the boarding location and permitted passenger approach before arranging a pickup or setting out with luggage.

APRAM distinguishes pedestrian access from vehicle access, with restrictions when ships are present. A public road route or taxi booking should not be interpreted as permission for every vehicle to reach the ship. Follow the current port instructions and the embarkation documents, especially if a transfer or accessible vehicle needs to use a controlled approach.

Madeira Airport is the flight gateway. The airport operator identifies the Aerobus from Arrivals towards Praia Formosa, while SIGA publishes the route through Funchal, including Avenida do Mar. That is a city stop, not a guarantee of a ship-side drop-off. Choose a suitable stop and complete the terminal approach, or use a confirmed road transfer. Published journey times remain estimates.

Plan onward travel using the actual island bus network. No passenger-rail connection to the cruise terminal is verified here. The waterfront, the cobbled streets of Zona Velha and Mercado dos Lavradores make different stops during a city visit. Monte is another district above the centre and should be treated as a separate journey rather than an extension of a flat waterfront walk.

The authority's dated forward programme shows repeated AIDA, TUI Cruises, P&O Cruises, Costa, MSC and Marella visits. These are planned calls, not proof that every visit offers embarkation. Leave enough time for the return to your assigned quay. The coordinate records Funchal's general official location rather than a terminal entrance.
