Celebrity Edge introduced the Edge series in 2018 after construction at Saint-Nazaire. Its design became the starting point for a family that later included both similar-sized ships and longer versions. The lead ship is therefore a specific 306 metre vessel, identified by IMO 9812705, rather than a generic name for the whole class. Malala Yousafzai is its godmother, as recorded by the operator.
The yard describes two central design ideas: the movable Magic Carpet and accommodation that incorporates the veranda area into the room. Magic Carpet changes function according to its position along the ship's side. It can support tender operations or provide a bar and dining setting. Understanding the operating role matters more than treating it as an ordinary elevator or assuming access to a personal ride whenever desired.
The accommodation question is equally practical. An Infinite Veranda brings an opening glazed section into the living area, while other room types use different balcony arrangements. Compare enclosure, furniture layout and the exact room position before choosing. The Retreat is another category decision, with private facilities for its suite guests. Neither the ship's headline capacity nor a photograph of the pool establishes the access rights attached to a particular booking.
Edge also has a distinct operating history. In June 2021 it led the return of major passenger cruising from a United States port after the shutdown, sailing from Port Everglades. That was a restart, not its original service entry. Its first Australian season followed in 2023, with an arrival through Darwin and sailings from Sydney. These events explain how an existing ship reached different markets without changing its construction year.
A Marseille yard manager confirms the completed 2023 drydock as routine underwater work, including maintenance of thrusters and propulsion pods. ABB separately confirms Azipod propulsion through an interview with the ship's captain. Neither source implies an entirely new interior. Current operator facts give 130818 GT and 2918 guests at double occupancy, with 1467 staterooms in the individual corporate profile. Hull breadth is 39 metres. Maximum guests, exact crew and total decks remain open because the available references use incompatible inventories;14 guest decks are not silently converted into a total. The 21.8 knots published by Celebrity is cruising speed rather than a verified maximum.
