About us Viking Sky

Viking Sky is the third ship in Viking's ocean series, delivered at Fincantieri's Ancona yard on 26 January 2017. The operator records its naming in Tromsø on 22 June that year. The ship's permanent IMO number is 9650420, and its current insurer records 47,842 gross tonnage with Bergen as port of registry. The Norwegian investigation authority's vessel particulars identify registration in the Norwegian International Ship Register.

The design offers private verandas throughout the advertised accommodation and a maximum of 930 passengers in the latest annual fleet table. It sits within the early ocean family rather than the later, larger 998-guest generation. Room categories still differ in size, layout and reservation priority. Check the precise accommodation description and location before assuming that every veranda category delivers the same experience.

Public spaces reflect the Scandinavian-inspired design described at delivery. Two pools include an aft infinity pool, while the spa combines a sauna with a snow grotto. Lectures, reading and time in destinations are central to the present ocean programme. The operator's minimum age is eighteen, with no casino. Included alternative restaurant dining requires reservations, and optional experiences should be compared against the actual fare.

A significant event belongs in the ship's history. On 23 March 2019, Viking Sky lost propulsion and steering during a storm at Hustadvika. The Norwegian Safety Investigation Authority published its final report in March 2024, identifying insufficient lubricating oil in operating generator sump tanks combined with ship movement, alongside operational, technical and organisational factors. That report concerns a specific investigated accident. It is neither omitted nor presented as a statement of today's operating condition or a claim that every recommendation has been closed.

The machinery reference describes diesel-electric propulsion and an explicit twenty-knot maximum, distinct from service speed. A later hydrogen project elsewhere in the fleet is not equipment on Sky. The cabin total remains unresolved between the original 465-room delivery description and the builder's later 473-room series sheet. English is the core programme language, with US dollars for the standard onboard account. Choose the itinerary and room together, with realistic expectations of port time and the services included in the booked departure.
