About us Viking Astrea
Viking Astrea reached the water at Ancona on 11 September 2026. Fincantieri identifies Francesca Baldinelli, who works in the yard's production control area, as godmother of the launch ceremony. This was a shipbuilding event during construction, rather than a passenger inaugural sailing. The distinction matters because the commercial delivery remains scheduled for 2027 and the ship is excluded from the current active fleet.
The yard describes a 239-metre vessel accommodating up to 998 passengers in 499 cabins. Approximately 54,300 gross tonnage is a project announcement, not an independently verified final register measurement. Astrea develops the larger ocean platform associated with Vela, with a new energy arrangement also planned for Libra. Shared accommodation scale does not establish identical machinery throughout the older fleet.
Liquid hydrogen and fuel cells form part of the proposed propulsion system. Their purpose includes enabling operation without emissions in environmentally sensitive waters. This should be understood as a designed operating capability under appropriate conditions, rather than a promise of zero environmental impact across an entire cruise. The production and supply of energy remain separate questions from emissions at the point of operation.
The Ancona ceremony documents genuine physical construction. A booking page alone would provide weaker evidence because cruise operators often sell future departures before delivery. Here the builder's dated report establishes a hull at the launch stage; fitting out, testing and handover still follow. The shipbuilder also places the project within an industrial partnership with Viking that began in 2012.
Travellers considering the first programme should check the latest schedule and the room category actually offered. General ocean-brand features cannot replace the final vessel's own published facilities or accessibility information. Neither an old sister-ship deck drawing nor a promotional rendering confirms the delivered arrangement. The current profile therefore distinguishes announced cabin capacity from unresolved final particulars.
There is no completed service history to describe yet. Construction completion year, entry into service, current flag, individual IMO confirmation, crew complement and total physical decks remain unverified in the primary material reviewed. They are left empty with explanations rather than filled from another vessel. Once delivery and operation are documented, the record can be updated without rewriting a planned event as though it had already happened.

A dash means no independently verified value is available. Guest counts at double occupancy and maximum capacity are different measures. GT measures enclosed volume, not weight.
