About us Volendam
Volendam is the older of Holland America Line's two current R-class ships, delivered in 1999 and identified by IMO 9156515. Fincantieri built it at Marghera in Italy. The insurer lists 61,214 gross tonnage, while the original builder gives 238 metres overall and a moulded beam of 32.2 metres. This is a smaller physical platform than the line's Vista or Pinnacle generation, but size alone does not establish the style of a particular voyage.
Long journeys are an important part of the ship's documented deployment. Volendam actually departed Fort Lauderdale on 4 January 2026 for the 133-day Grand World Voyage, according to the operator's subsequent departure report. The advertised itinerary had previously been revised to avoid the Red Sea, with more Asian and Central American exploration instead. This is a useful reminder that the version of a world-cruise route matters; a long-standing title does not guarantee unchanged ports.
Passengers considering a full Grand Voyage and those joining a shorter segment face different planning choices. Embarkation and disembarkation cities, time away from home and connections need to be checked against the purchased section. A round-trip description of the full journey does not make every segment a round trip. The ship's name and a headline duration should therefore be read with the detailed itinerary.
Completed Freeport work from October into November 2024 is recorded by the logistics contractor involved. That record establishes a real yard project, without independently documenting every interior alteration reported elsewhere. The profile does not claim a new attraction merely because a refurbishment year appears in a schedule. Earlier service history also includes a temporary refugee-accommodation role in Rotterdam, followed by a confirmed return to guest cruising in September 2022.
Published double occupancy is 1,432 guests, distinct from maximum capacity. Historic room totals differ from the original builder's figures and remain unresolved here. When choosing Volendam, compare the applicable accommodation layout and itinerary with the sister ship Zaandam rather than assume matching dimensions mean identical rooms, programmes or recent work.
