About us Zaandam

Zaandam belongs to Holland America Line's smaller R-class pair alongside Volendam. Delivered in 2000, it carries IMO 9156527 and was built by Fincantieri at Marghera. Its current insured gross tonnage is 61,396, and the builder gives an overall length of 238 metres. This places it below the operator's Vista, Signature and Pinnacle ships in physical scale. A smaller vessel is still a substantial cruise ship, so the individual itinerary and onboard spaces deserve consideration alongside passenger numbers.

The operator confirmed that Zaandam sailed on an Amazon Explorer voyage on 8 February 2025 after a two-week Bahamas dry dock. This establishes completed work and a real return to guest cruising. The resulting changes provide more useful detail for a current choice than describing the ship only by its age. The update covered the library, creative and games spaces, spa and selected suite-related facilities.

The refurbished library received an updated collection for borrowing aboard. Explorations Café became a multipurpose space with puzzle and games tables, and a dedicated Art Studio was introduced. These spaces support different ways of spending a sea day, particularly on an extended voyage. The presence of a studio does not guarantee a particular class at a particular time; the sailing's programme remains the relevant schedule.

The Thermal Suite was rebuilt with features including an infrared sauna, steam room and experiential shower. The work also improved accessibility in spa and salon areas. Guests should distinguish that physical improvement from the price and availability of treatments. Access to the Neptune Lounge likewise depends on the qualifying suite arrangements and is not an amenity promised to every cabin.

The published 1,432 guests is a double-occupancy figure. Older cabin inventories disagree with the original builder record, and the maximum passenger count has not been independently reconciled here. No larger capacity is inferred from the total number of people the technical design can carry. Compare Zaandam with Volendam using the relevant accommodation plan and confirmed programme, while keeping later fleet transformation publicity separate from this ship's completed work.
