Viking Orion is the fifth ship built for Viking's original ocean programme, delivered by Fincantieri at Ancona on 7 June 2018. Its naming followed in Livorno on 14 June with retired NASA astronaut Anna Fisher as godmother. The permanent IMO number is 9796250. The current insurer records 47,861 gross tonnage, rather than simply repeating the rounded figure often used for the early fleet.
The exploration theme has a specific onboard expression. Planetarium contractor Digital Planetariums documents an installation on Orion and its later replication on Jupiter. This is a projection-based indoor experience, distinct from observing the real sky outside. The availability and schedule of individual presentations should be checked aboard rather than inferred from a construction reference. It also does not make a planetarium a feature of every Viking ocean sister ship.
Current operator information identifies an all-veranda ship for 930 guests. The latest annual fleet table describes that number as maximum passenger capacity. A balcony is therefore part of the advertised accommodation concept, while the floor area, layout and reservation priority differ between room categories. Compare the precise category and location, particularly when private outdoor space is an important part of your holiday.
Fincantieri's individual technical page provides 228.2 metres overall length, 28.8 metres moulded beam and an explicit twenty-knot maximum speed. The machinery is diesel-electric, with generator sets feeding propulsion motors. Later hydrogen projects are not propulsion claims for Orion. The cabin inventory remains unresolved because the builder's headline total differs from the operator's published room count; crew accommodation is not added to the guest inventory.
The present ocean programme is for adults aged eighteen and over, with cultural talks, reading spaces and destination visits rather than a casino. Included alternative restaurant dining requires reservations; drinks and optional shore experiences depend on the fare. English is the principal programme language and the standard onboard account uses US dollars. Itineraries on the current ship page range across different regions, so the actual sailing and seasonal conditions matter more than assuming that an exploration-themed ship always follows the same route.
